Discord Channel Topic Generator
Channel topics are limited to 1024 characters and appear in the channel header, in search, and in the pinned description on mobile. This generator writes topics that explain what a channel is for in the first line, so the useful part is visible before the header truncates it.
How to use the Channel Topic Generator
- Enter the channel name and what happens in it.
- Generate a topic and check it against the 1024-character limit.
- Copy it into Edit Channel, Overview, Channel Topic.
Best practices for Discord Channel Topics
- State Channel Purpose: Clearly summarize what belongs in the channel so moderators don't have to redirect off-topic discussions.
- Highlight Pin Messages: Reference pinned messages (e.g.
📌 Check pinned messages for server FAQs & useful links). - Include Important Links: Add direct links to websites, wikis, or verification rules.
Channel topics, where they appear, and the 1,024 limit
A channel topic holds up to 1,024 characters, which is far more room than the interface suggests. On desktop only the first portion appears in the channel header before truncating; the full text is visible on click and in the mobile channel description. That split is why the first sentence has to carry the meaning and any detail belongs afterwards.
Topics are more functional than decorative. They appear in channel search results, in the mobile channel list, and to new members deciding where to post, which makes them the cheapest available onboarding tool. A topic that states what belongs in the channel and what does not prevents more misplaced messages than a rules channel most people scroll past.
Markdown works in topics but is inconsistent in what it renders, and mentions and timestamps do not resolve at all, appearing as raw syntax instead. Because of that, topics are best kept as plain prose. If you need a link, a bare URL is more reliable than a formatted one, since masked link syntax does not render outside embeds.
Common problems and fixes
- The topic is cut off in the header
The desktop header truncates well before 1,024 characters. Put the essential information in the first sentence. - A mention shows as raw text
Mentions and timestamps do not resolve in topics. Use plain channel names instead. - The topic cannot be edited
Editing requires Manage Channel on that channel.
