Discord Text Formatter
Discord formatting is markdown wrappers, and combining them means nesting the symbols in the right order or the message renders with visible asterisks. This formatter applies bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, spoilers, subtext, and code with one click and handles the nesting for you.
How to use the Text Formatter
- Type or paste your message into the input box.
- Click the formats you want, including combined styles.
- Copy the formatted text and send it in Discord.
Quick Formatting Shortcuts
Applying Discord markdown wrappers formats announcements and rules cleanly.
Combining Discord formatting without breaking it
Discord formatting is a set of paired symbols wrapped around text: double asterisks for bold, single for italic, double underscores for underline, double tildes for strikethrough, double pipes for spoilers. Applied one at a time these are simple. The difficulty starts when you combine them, because the symbols must nest completely rather than overlap, and Discord silently renders the raw symbols when they do not.
Escaping is the other common problem. If your text legitimately contains an asterisk or underscore, Discord will read it as formatting and consume it. A backslash before the character escapes it, and wrapping the whole string in backticks disables markdown parsing entirely for that span. This matters most for file paths, variable names, and anything copied out of code.
Everything you format counts toward the 2,000 character message limit, and formatting symbols are part of that count. A heavily formatted announcement can hit the ceiling sooner than its visible length suggests. If you regularly run long, formatted announcements, sending them as an embed through a webhook gives you 4,096 characters in the description and a cleaner presentation.
Common problems and fixes
- Spoiler tags reveal the text anyway
Spoilers do not apply inside code blocks or to attached images from the desktop paste flow. Mark the attachment as a spoiler at upload time instead. - Formatting works on desktop but not mobile
Older mobile builds lag behind on newer syntax such as subtext. Confirm the mobile client is up to date. - Underscores in a URL break the link
Wrap the URL in angle brackets, which both escapes the markdown and suppresses the link preview.
Frequently asked questions
How do I combine bold and italic text in Discord?
Wrap your text with three asterisks: ***bold and italic***.
How do I underline text in Discord?
Wrap your text with two underscores: __underlined text__.
How do I strikethrough text in Discord?
Wrap your text with two tildes: ~~strikethrough text~~.
Can I format text inside Discord code blocks?
Text inside code blocks (`code`) is rendered as monospace and disables other markdown styling like bold and italics.
How do I stop Discord from formatting my text at all?
Wrap the whole message in a code block using triple backticks, or escape individual characters with a backslash.
Can I combine bold and spoiler?
Yes. Put the spoiler pipes outside and the bold asterisks inside, so one pair fully encloses the other.
Why does my underline not work?
Underline requires two underscores on each side. A single underscore produces italic instead.
