Discord PFP Grabber

Discord's CDN stores avatars at up to 4096 pixels but the client only ever requests a small version, so right-clicking gives you a thumbnail. This tool rebuilds the CDN URL at full size and returns the original avatar in PNG, WebP, or animated GIF.

How the Discord PFP Grabber works

Every Discord user has a unique snowflake User ID. Discord hosts all user avatars on its global high-speed content delivery network (cdn.discordapp.com). When you enter a User ID, this tool decodes the snowflake timestamp, attempts to fetch the live avatar hash through public API lookups, and generates direct CDN links in any resolution from 128px up to full 4096px.

Default avatar calculation

For users who haven't set a custom profile picture or when an avatar hash is omitted, Discord calculates a default avatar using the formula (userID >> 22) % 6 (or discriminator % 5 for legacy accounts). This tool automatically calculates the exact default avatar so you always get the right image.

Animated GIF avatars

Discord Nitro users with animated avatars have an avatar hash starting with a_. When downloading, selecting the GIF format will deliver the original animated frames.

Avatar resolutions, formats, and default avatars

Discord serves avatars from its CDN at whatever size the requesting client asks for, using a size parameter that accepts powers of two up to 4096. The client requests small versions because a member list needs 40 pixels, which is why right-clicking and saving produces a thumbnail. Requesting the maximum size returns the full-resolution asset the CDN holds.

Format is part of the same URL. The same avatar can be served as PNG, WebP, or JPEG, and animated avatars, which require Nitro, are additionally available as GIF. An animated avatar's hash begins with a distinguishing prefix, so you can tell whether a GIF version exists before requesting one.

Accounts with no uploaded avatar use one of Discord's default images, which are generated from the account rather than uploaded. These have their own CDN path and are only available at low resolution, because they are flat vector-derived images rather than user files. If a lookup returns a plain coloured shape, that is why.
