Creating Clear Role Hierarchies

Top-down role hierarchies make permissions manageable and distinguish staff from members.

Role hierarchy, colour, and what the sidebar communicates

Discord displays roles in order and colours a member's name using their highest coloured role, so a role list is read as a hierarchy whether or not one was designed. Naming across the set matters more than any individual name: a list mixing formal staff titles with joke roles reads as inconsistent, and members infer authority from position and colour rather than from wording.

Position drives permissions as well as appearance. A moderator can only act on members whose highest role sits below their own, and a bot can only assign roles below its own highest role. Getting the ordering right at creation avoids the common situation where a moderator cannot time out a member who happens to hold a decorative role positioned too high.

The hoist setting, labelled Display role members separately, is what pulls a role into its own member list section. Hoisting every role produces an unreadable sidebar. Hoisting staff and perhaps boosters, while leaving progression and interest roles unhoisted, keeps the list scannable while still making the roles visible on profiles.

Common problems and fixes

• A moderator cannot act on a member
  The target's highest role sits above the moderator's. Reorder roles so staff sit above everyone they moderate.
• Every role shows in the member list
  Too many roles are hoisted. Turn off Display role members separately for all but a few.
• A member's name colour is wrong
  Colour comes from the highest coloured role, not the most recent. Reorder, or remove the colour from the higher role.
