Discord Slowmode Calculator
Slowmode set too low does nothing during a raid, and set too high it kills an active channel for good. This calculator recommends a cooldown from your channel's real message rate and active member count, and shows the effect on throughput before you apply it.

A 10-second cooldown allows conversations to remain readable without breaking thread comprehension.

How Slowmode protects servers
Slowmode is one of the most effective built-in moderation tools Discord offers. By restricting each non-administrator user to one message per interval, it immediately mitigates token raids, webhook copy-paste floods, and emote cascades without requiring full channel lockouts.
Choosing a slowmode interval that actually works
Slowmode sets a per-user cooldown between messages in a channel, adjustable from a few seconds up to six hours. The reason it is worth calculating rather than guessing is that its effect scales with the number of active participants, not with the raw message rate. A cooldown that calms a channel with twenty active members will barely register in one with two hundred.
The maths is simple: with a cooldown of N seconds and M actively posting members, the channel's ceiling is roughly M divided by N messages per second. Working backwards from the read speed you want gives you the interval, and that number is usually lower than instinct suggests. Ten to thirty seconds is enough to make a busy channel readable without ending the conversation.
Slowmode is a poor anti-raid tool on its own, because a raid uses many accounts posting once each rather than a few accounts posting repeatedly. Per-user cooldowns barely slow that down. Verification levels, join gates, and account age requirements address raids at the entry point, with slowmode as a supplementary measure rather than the primary defence.
Common problems and fixes
- Slowmode did not stop a raid
Per-user cooldowns do little against many accounts posting once each. Raise the verification level and add a join gate. - The channel went completely silent
The interval is too high for the active member count. Reduce it and reassess. - Some members are unaffected
Manage Messages and Manage Channel bypass slowmode. Check which roles hold those permissions.
