Discord Username Generator
Since Discord moved to unique usernames, handles are lowercase, limited to letters, numbers, underscores, and full stops, and short ones are almost entirely taken. This generator produces handles that satisfy those rules and are short enough to still be plausible.
How to use the Username Generator
- Choose a style, such as clean, short, gaming, or aesthetic.
- Generate handles that already follow Discord's character rules.
- Try your favourite in User Settings, Profiles, Username.
Discord Unique Username System
Discord unique usernames must be lowercase alphanumeric characters (a-z, 0-9), periods (.), and underscores (_).
Discord's username rules since the 2023 handle change
Discord replaced the old name-and-discriminator system with unique handles, and the rules are considerably tighter than before. A username is 2 to 32 characters, lowercase only, and limited to letters, numbers, underscores, and periods. Periods cannot be consecutive and cannot start or end the handle. Every username is unique across the entire platform.
The consequence is that short handles are almost entirely taken. Any common word or short combination was claimed during the migration, so a realistic strategy accepts a slightly longer handle or uses a separator. A period or underscore between two words often frees up something otherwise unavailable and reads better than appending digits.
The display name is the relaxed counterpart and does most of the visible work. It allows 1 to 32 characters, any Unicode including emoji and spaces, and does not need to be unique. Your handle is what people type to find you; your display name is what they see. Styled text belongs in the display name, never in the handle, where it is not permitted.
Common problems and fixes
- Every handle you try is taken
Handles are unique platform-wide. Add a period or underscore separator rather than trailing digits. - The username is rejected as invalid
Check for uppercase letters, spaces, or symbols. Only lowercase letters, numbers, underscores, and periods are allowed. - A period placement is rejected
Periods cannot be consecutive and cannot appear at the start or end of the handle.
Frequently asked questions
What characters are allowed in Discord unique usernames?
Lowercase letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), periods (.), and underscores (_). Length must be 2-32 characters.
Are periods and underscores interchangeable in usernames?
No. user.name and user_name are completely different unique usernames.
Can I use consecutive periods in Discord usernames?
No. Discord does not allow two consecutive periods (e.g. user..name is invalid).
What is the difference between a Unique Username and a Display Name?
Your unique username (@username) is your global identifier, while your Display Name is what people see in chat and can contain any symbols, fonts, or emojis.
What characters can a Discord username contain?
Lowercase letters, numbers, underscores, and periods, between 2 and 32 characters, with no consecutive or leading and trailing periods.
How often can I change my username?

The username is your unique lowercase handle. The display name is the flexible name shown to others and can contain any Unicode.
